Where to spot Kea near Wanaka?

Post by ErinV614 »

Kia Ora! I only have a few days left in NZ and am now staying near Mount Aspiring National Park with my parents who are older. I’ve already tried Arthur’s Pass Village, Mount Cook, the viaduct and kea point track but so far I’ve seen no kea. I won’t be able to make it to Milford sound unfortunately. So, are there any suggestions for good kea sightings in Mount Aspiring National Park or the drive up to Greymouth (not Arthur’s pass)? Thank you!

They can be seen in Franz Josef town, and come down to sea level at Okarito. It can depend on the season as to whether they are low down but check ebird.org/map for the latest sightings.
