Long tailed cuckoos overwintering

Post by hayden »

I'm convinced I saw a LTC Sunday 8/6/25 on the road out to Muriwai, and since then there have been two more reports on ebird from Whangarei on the 10th and Kaipara on the 11th

Doesn't feel normal for this time of the year, or am I only noticing because I'm now paying attention to reports of them?

A few birds are thought to overwinter, and it makes sense that they would at least be in the north of the country. They can be so cryptic that it wouldn’t surprise me if it was more common than generally thought.
A shame none of those records seem to have sound recordings to verify.

I can vouch for the observers in Whangarei, consistently reliably records when I follow up on them.
