Accessible bird watching in Wellington
Hi, I'm hoping you can help me with a rather particular request. I'm newly into bird watching and live in the Wellington region. I'm hoping to find a good spot to bird watch that is very accessible, we can drive but I have a disability that means I'm only able to walk about 500m one way on a good day. I dont need to see anything particularly rare but I'd love to see a variety from what I'm able to spot from home. I really appreciate any suggestions.

There are a few good spots.
- Zealandia is wheelchair accessible. It is a good spot to see a lot of our native birds, and there are some wonderful trails. A membership is around $50 for the year, with unlimited entries.
- You can drive to Beach House near Island Bay and sit on the deck in the cafe, or in the parking lot outside it, and see a fair amount of seabirds from the coast. It's a bit better on days when there is a stiffer wind, but that may make it harder to focus bins.
- Otari-Wilton's Bush has a wheelchair accessible path between the two buildings and also has a good amount of native birds that can be seen easily from those paths. It's also free.
- The Botanical Gardens near Thorndon also have some good entry ways. I would suggest going near the duck pond on the north side.
- Further afield, there is good car driving around Pāuatahanui coast line. I've seen some good waders without having to go too far from the car. There's also a couple of accessible boardwalks.
Michael Szabo's new book, Wild Wellington, may have more suggestions about where to go and what to see there.

Yes, those are good recommendations from Richard. My illustrated book 'Wild Wellington - a guide to the wildlife and wild places of Te Upoko-o-Te-Ika' covers over 30 locations:
