Sid Marsh in his book[i] Kiwi Hunter[/i] described a Little Spotted Kiwi from near the area where this latter bird was found, must be about 20 years or so ago - he referred to the bird as a Blue Hen (the name the old bush folks gave them in pioneer days). From memory it was paired with a Rowi. Maybe it was a hybrid - I think they have been found in the Ōkārito/Whanganui area too.

In case anyone missed it on the TVNZ news tonight - 9!! birds have been found and they have 2 chick's brought to Willowbank as well as 2 eggs in an incubator - amazing!!
Maybe I'll have to think again about all those SI Kokako reports I always dismiss...
