South Island trip - advice for targets please

I have a follow-up question about the Rowi, for those who have been over there, either with or without the tour. I was in contact with the tour operator there and only discovered through correspondance that no photography was permitted, even under red light, etc, which seems to be part of the agreement they have even though red light ought to not cause any disruption.

My question is, if we were to strike out on our own to look for the Rowi ourselves, acknowledging our chances of success would be much lower, and we were to try around Pakihi Walk Lookout and the Wahapo Power Station (if accessible), would this be stepping on any toes, as we wouldn't want to bumble into the tour when they're trying to do their own thing. I suppose I'm asking if there's anywhere we should avoid looking simply out of courtesy?

We also managed to shift our dates a little so that we'll be looking for the Rock Wren in Otira in the first week of November, which should hopefully reduce the chance of avalanche danger.

Yes unfortunately Coops isn’t able/doesn’t want people to Photograph birds. I find red light can be pretty hit and miss at the best of times tbh.

Generally you won’t be stepping on his toes regardless of where you go. Your chances are definitely reduced going it alone but I know people who have seen them solo, and you’re unlikely to bump into Ian as he has 4-5+ different spots he frequents.
