Re: Okere Falls - Ring-necked parakeets
Interesting Tim, I not long joined BirdingNZ & hadn't seen this thread until now. As a useless bit of information I believe I know where these birds originally came from. My BIL purchased a property(which he has since sold) at the end of one of the tiny peninsulas that juts into Lake Rotoiti, a neighbour was known as the "Bird Lady" & she had released(or they had escaped) numerous exotic birds, she had quite a number of aviaries. She also put food out for them. I don't believe she lives there now, this was a number of years ago.

Not useless information at all. It is good to know how these things come about.

Is the area they were seen in the only site where they existed in the wild in New Zealand, meaning that they have now gone the way of the rainbow lorikeet?

Yeah, thanks for that - that is interesting ... I look onto that peninsula. It may explain a crimson rosella I saw few years ago too. I have seen single ring-necks toward Mourea about 2kms away but again I've not seen them for months now.
Cheers and thanks again

In fact I had a followup conversation with my husband this morning, he always has a better memory than me. The woman used to release the birds as she thought the surrounding pines & bush would look much better with Australian parrots flying through them! He also remembered that we went for a walk down to the lake front through private property and there were quite a number of concrete pads where the avairies used to be. The woman had moved on not long after my BIL shifted there, it was somewhere near Motumauri Island/Te Ti Bay.

The “Bird Lady” with the big aviaries at Lake Rotoiti was Lynne Richardson. She moved into town and gave up breeding the birds. She used to hand rear lots of exotic parrots. Apparently when she got too many of the less valuable birds like the ring necks she released them into the wild and left out food for them. Think there were also maybe lorikeets let go but not sure. DOC would not have been impressed either way.
