I was just thinking the same thing, though 4 times a year isn't often enough, how about bi-monthly? I was thinking that we could go for a E35 sized post, so an A4 booklet, which is $2.40 a post, so 6 times a year that would be $14.4,so a year-long membership could be $15? And if you pay after a letter, it costs $2 less perhaps? You could think of a name. The best I could come up with was Junior OSNZ, which isn't all that great considering several of them won't know what that is. Perhaps after a bit of discussion we could start our websites etc. But first we need to be settled on posting etc. I don't mind writing the magazine, but perhaps you could be editor etc?

I have just realized how much ink costs? Though we don't want this to be much more expensive than it is... Perhaps we could just get by provided we had enough customers? I was thinking for the magazine it could have perhaps two pages for the younger kids, with like crosswords etc, then an identify that bird kind of thing, and then a few articles on different bird species. Perhaps in places we could list rare birds from the past two months as well, and a little blurb of whats happening at Miranda, Elsemere, Orokonui and that sort of thing.

This was the sort of thing that has kept me awake at night for months!
Personal birding experiences, sightings, photos and drawing etc. may be good too.
Here is the young birders network http://ebird.org/content/ybn/ they have a thing about starting a club.
If we could get sponsors that would help.

Well there is something else we can alert people too, boosting ebirds popularity, which would be great news nation wide. Sponsers would be great, but who? Do you have any name ideas yet? I think that the simplest first step we could take would be get a name. I am out of ideas.

(from YBN)

"This is where advice solicited by organizers
from existing clubs can guide you. Questions to
answer at this stage include:
• Youth membership fees—Will there be dues for
the club? Some YBCs offer free membership and
simply encourage donations from participants.
• Adult supporter fees—Some clubs have a separate
fee for adults who support the club and
participate in field trips. (Again, check the Ohio
example to see their structure.) Will you have
this category in your club?
• Club leadership—Every club needs leaders.
How will your club officials be selected? Who
will collect membership dues, if they are imposed?
How long will each person hold office?
• Publications—A club newsletter may be established
to help keep members and supporters
informed about club activities or other opportunities.
Who will spearhead this project and how
will it be distributed? How often?"

How about, because I do like this idea of yours of it having to do with young birds, why not something like Leaving the Nest, and then the logo be like your idea "Helping Fledge Young Birders of New Zealand"? It's just an idea, and I feel you should draw a logo, just the outline of a distinctive native bird, though not the kokako, saddleback, robin or kiwi as that could fall under copy write, and godwits are migrants so... Perhaps something like a baby dotterel, so cute and relevant to our title?
