Steve Wratten

I've just heard that Steve Wratten passed away this morning after a short illness. Steve was a BirdingNZ member for a few years and will be known to Canterbury birders.

I didn't know him personally but he was a top-level academic whose profession was in Entomology but he also seemed completely happy to be out birding.

Canterbury birders didn't know Steve that well and he wasn't a member of BirdsNZ for very long. He used to take visitors to Lincoln University out to Lake Ellesmere to show them the birds and he accompanied Colin Hill on Colin's many lake trips even when Colin was losing his memory later in life. Colin's family were very grateful for Steve's friendship. Steve had a very fine academic record mainly in entomology and horticulture.

Steve also co-authored (with Rory Putman) a first-year ecology textbook sometime back in the 1980s. It was straightforward and well-written. Unfortunately, my copy went to the University of Zimbabwe when I left 15 years ago, and so cannot refresh my memory of the details, but I know that I used it a lot. Earlier, Steve had also published Field and Laboratory Exercises in Ecology, another useful book by all accounts. As Jan says, he had a fine academic record and will be missed.

There was a lengthy obituary in this weekends press. It mentions Steve’s multi-lingual fluency, his academic career, family life and lifelong passion for birding. If someone can find the link online then it would be nice to post it here
