I know there are bittern's at Ahuriri but it was the location of this one that was different, I got up early to spend the morning with kingfishers before sunrise and after 20mins of looking and setting up hides for kingfishers I heard and noticed a strange bird flying above me, it flew quite unbalanced like a heron but without the long neck, it also made quite a different sound to a heron flying and had a longer thinner wingspan.
Would have loved to get a shot but I could only manage very slow shutter speeds as the sun wasnt up yet 1/20 of second.
The bittern was seen flying from napier city direction towards the southern marsh area, 5mins from the main car park area, I am sure he could have been hunting in the drain that boarders the estuary.
