Possible magpie lark, Whatitiri Road Whangarei

Post by Colin Miskelly »

Report received via NZ Birds Online:

"Hi, have seen what I think to be a Magpie Lark. Whatitiri Road Whangarei. Sighted from car so unable to get photo. Bird was on grass side of road and hopped up onto low growth then into undergrowth. Have seen them in Australia. Certain it was not Magpie. Too big and wrong shape for leucistic Blackbird."

I've been told that road is about 10km long so it would be useful if they'd said roughly how far along the road they saw it.

The person who reported this to the NZ Birds Online website has now posted to Facebook about it. When asked if she could be more specific about the location she declined to give any further info.

A different recent report of a possible Magpie Lark near Mangawhai has now turned out to be a partially leucistic Blackbird.
