Geoff Harrow writing in 'Marsh sandpiper at Orowaiti Lagoon':
"On the afternoon of 5/5/68, I was observing an Avocet (Recurvirostra novaehollandiae) feeding in a brackish pool by the rubbish dump in the Orowaiti Lagoon near Westport. A strange, very much smaller wader, came into my viewing field."

Fascinating that Harrow saw the marsh sandpiper as highly reportable, while the red-necked avocet got only a passing mention. NZ Birds Online reports there have been only 4 records of avocets in NZ between 1870 and 1970, and none since then.

Yes but wasn’t that avocet famously there for quite a long time, so Geoff was more interested in the new bird that appeared.
