Chatham Is. Pelagic trip - 7th-12th March - 2026

Looking for 7 keen birders to join a team of 8, for four 1-day pelagic trips off the main Chatham Island and surrounding off-shore Islands. Pyramid, Forty Fours,South East and Mangere island.( no landings).
Main target birds - Chatham Petrel, Pyramid Prion.and hopefully Magenta Petrel & Yellow nosed Albert.
There will also be 3 days dedicated to a full island tour looking for the main Chatham Island endemics/sub species.

Now all full for this trip. 2027 trip is in the planning stage regarding the dates.

Trip list for the 4 days at sea 5th-12th. March.2026
Observations of note: Two excellent encounters with Sub Ant Little Shearwater feeding flock, and hardly any Prions this trip.

Chatham Albert common
N.Buller’s Albert common.
N.Royal. 30+ daily
White capped Albert present 3 daily
Salvin’s Albert. present 3+. daily
Wandering Albert (Antipodean type ) 4 individuals +1 juv.
N Giant Petrel regular. 6+ daily
White faced stormy 300+ in slick daily.
Grey- backed Stormy Low numbers but regular to slick
White-chinned Pet regular daily
Westland Pet Occasional
Chatham Petrel 1 brief flyby
Cook’s Petrel -10
Magenta Petrel. (Spotlighted at camp)
Sub Antarctic little Shearwater 2+ feeding flock several hundred
Sooty Shearwater Regular passing by
Buller’s Shearwater. Regular
Flesh footed Shearwater. 2+
Sub ant Skua 4+. on. S.E Island.
Arctic Skua. 1
Pyramid Prion 2 seen briefly
Fairy Prion -10
Broad-billed Prion 1
Shore plover north landing S.E.Is.
White fronted tern.
Chatham shag
Pitt island shag
Red-crowned Parakeet S.E.Is.
Forbes Parakeet. 4+ Mangere.Is.

Next trip: Jan 19th-26th 2027. 3 spots left.
