There were 21 NZ Dotterels, male and female, some in breeding plumage and some banded, at Waipu estuary this morning at high-ish tide.
There were also four NZ Fairy Terns (two of which were banded - two were standing up, two were sitting).
There were also 26 Variable Oystercatchers, a Spur-winged Plover, and two Little Pied Shags.
Access to view these birds was from the end of Johnston Point Road, (half way between Waipu town and Waipu Cove on your left). From the end, walk around to your left on tidal edge vegetation, until you can see the spit that comes out of the rock wall at left. A narrow portion of it was exposed on this tide.
See photo attached of several of the NZ Dotts and the four NZ FTs.
Best regards,
Suzi
