Looking for info on Otago seabird colonies

Hi everyone,
I’m a student at Otago University currently working on a project on seabirds as part of my course. I’m aiming to collate as many different sightings of where seabirds have colonies or breeding areas as possible to create a comprehensive dataset of all these known sites in Otago. I’m hoping to get in contact with anyone familiar with seabirds in Otago who would be interested in aiding this process by sharing any notes or information on these colony/breeding sites.
Importantly this collected data will be incorporated into the national seabird colony database, organised by Chris Gaskin (Forest&Bird). This resource in turn will be used to help identify Important Bird Areas (IBAs) in New Zealand. IBAs are part of an international programme to identify and protect sites which are critical to the long-term survival of avian species. I hope to assist in the early stages of this process by collating data to support classification of candidate IBAs and to identify priority areas for future survey work.
I’m therefore keen to get in contact with anyone who would be interested to either send through any records of locations of colonies or perhaps review a spreadsheet of the currently known sites. Any historic, informal records and those at well known sites would be really useful as well and any specific information such as colony size and dates of sighting would be great. If you’re able to help with this project I’d be really grateful if you could get in contact through birdingnz or my email address below, or also post any specific sightings here. Additionally please feel free to get in contact if you have any questions on the use of data or on the projects described above.
Many thanks,
Kate Hand
