"Buller's Birds of New Zealand" exhibition at Te Papa

Post by Michael Szabo »

There is a fascintating exhibition on at Te Papa at the moment showcasing specimens of several extinct NZ birds alongside vivid artworks by JG Keulemans' from "Buller's Birds of New Zealand". 'Star of the show' is Keulemans' painting of a pair of huia perched alongside an albino female huia.

There are also mounted specimens of a pair of huia, laughing owl, erect-crested penguin and little spotted kiwi, and skins of bush wren, South Island piopio, banded rail and a juvenile North Island kokako.

It's well worth going to see if you have a chance to over the next couple of months before it closes in February. The exhibition also coincides with the publication of a new large format edition of "Buller's Birds of New Zealand: the Complete Work of JG Keulemans" containing all the colour prints from the 1st and 2nd editions plus the supplement.

Editor Geoff Norman was interviewed by Kim Hill this morning if you want to find out more about the new book:
