can anyone tell me if there are any sites in Queenstown for cirl bunting or little owl or falcon? (Just some birds I thought might be possible; I don't know if any of those are even in the area).
And does anyone know if the intermediate egret that was living at the Milford wharf is still there?
Thanks very much for any replies.

I saw NZ falcon perched in a large pine tree near the airport, crested grebe, NZ scaup and black-billed gull on Lake Wakatipu, and crested grebe, NZ scaup and Australian coot on Lake Hayes in July.
Hope that helps.
Cheers,
Michael

Apparently the area around the gondola is a regular site too, but I've stayed a couple of times in the camp ground near its base with no joy. I think I remember someone reporting one from a house roof when driving from Frankton to Queenstown too.

thanks guys. I'm going to try and spot a crested penguin at Milford (was going this week, but postponed the trip due to giant slips!). Will keep a look out for falcons in any random place then

Why not look for fiordland cresteds N of Haast or at Jackson Bay. Certainly a lot easier at Jackson Bay than Milford, and closer to Hokitika? The Haast area is pretty good for Falcons too.

the trip was actually a tourism famil for Queenstown/Milford; I cancelled my spot on it because of the slip but still had the flights to and from Chch (where it would have started from), so am going alone in a couple of weeks. I still get most of it free and I've never been to Milford Sound before. Also they have bottlenose dolphins there which I haven't seen yet.

thanks Pat. It is just a very short trip, and I'm basically restricted to Queenstown itself and then the view from a bus between there and Milford.
