Bitterns and Spotless Crake on CHCH wetlands

Postby andrewcrossland » Mon Feb 11, 2013 1:30 am

Hi folks,

recent swamp bird observations over the last 2-3 weeks:

At least 2 Bittern have spent summer in the Bexley/Avon Rivermouth/Naughty Boys Island area - a new development (as was the 7+ seen there over autumn/winter 2012).

The fantastic earthquake induced 20+ ha of expanding raupo/carex swamp adjacent to the pre-exiisting 80+ ha saltmarsh on the South bank of the Waimakariri/Styx rivermouth area holds at least 2 Bittern (probably more) and while exploring in there a week or so ago, I flushed a Bittern, which in turn flushed a Pukeko, which in turn flushed a Spotless Crake (yes - Spotless, not a Marshie). This is the first confirmation of Spotless Crake at this site for many many decades.

Another Bittern was seen by CCC Park Ranger Tom Hitchom on Brooklands Lagoon Spit, and yet others have been seen around Lake Ellesmere's shoreline.

Great information and good news! I also heard on a recent visit, two different bittern in the Poynter Nature Reserve on the northern bank of the Waimakariri near the junction with the Kaiapoi River. Same birds as you've seen maybe? It's a very short flight for them.

And a Kotuku (White Heron) in the Bexley Wetlands this afternoon. Spotted it as driving home from work.
