Hi all, long time lurker and first time poster here. Today I was going for a walk in Marahau, at the top of the South Island, where I spotted what I thought was either a NZ or banded dotterel. I had a look at some images of the different species, and thought it looked more like a NZ dotterel, but could also be a juvenile banded which hadn't developed the clear markings yet. Can anyone shed some light?
Cheers.

Re: Help with Dotterel ID
It is a banded dotterel. The double bands are visible (NZ dott has more of an orange smudge than brown and red bands). Size can be hard to judge with single birds, but if you had a NZ dott nearby you'd see it is much bigger.
By the pose in the first photo I'd say it has a nest/young nearby.

Thanks for the quick reply Neil. Yes I first spotted the bird when it came running towards me doing the broken wing display, and had to keep an eye out for the nest as I moved away.
