Pelagics in March

Postby MacHector » Thu Feb 07, 2019 1:33 am

Hi All

I'm new to birding in New Zealand. Can anyone explain to me why nobody runs pelagics in March? Plenty in February, some in April. None is March! Is it a weather thing?

Best wishes

Albatross Encounter is running an extended 4 hour trip from Kaikoura on 11 March, 1-5PM.

I'm also looking for a pelagic trip in March, but in the North Island. If anyone know how to get onto one then any information would be much appreciated!

Hi Warwick. I am also looking at the North. Could you let me know the dates you can do? If I can offer up potentially more than one participant it might help my bargaining power. Cheers. Andrew

Hi Andrew, my dates are pretty flexible, anytime between March 10-17 and 23-25. Others may be possible too, would just take some reorganising. Thanks for looking into this!

Hi Warwick and anyone else interested

I have a putative pelagic out of somewhere near Kerikeri on 2 March. I have maybe a group of 3 so far (including you) which makes it a little expensive. If we could get the group up to 5 or 6 I think it would be viable. Is that date any good for you. Could you rustle up one or two more people?

Cheers

Hi Andrew, I'm afraid March 2 is out for me. Unfortunately I can't be north until the 10th at the earliest. May I ask who the pelagic is with?

I have just heard from Chris Gaskin with the NZ seabird trust that there will be a pelagic from near Whangarei on March 14. He can be contacted at chris at nzseabirds.com if you're interested in joining?
