Renwick, Black Kite

Post by TonyWilson »

The bird was still there yesterday. This was about my 6th attempt at finding it and I'd given up again after driving up the valley with no luck but it was right above the road on the way back!
Cheers,
Tony.

The bird was again there on the 11 Nov - showing really well at the final hour, we watched it soaring over the ridge for about 10 min with great scope views and comparisons with harriers.
Cheers,
Brent

Saw the bird there today (midday 4/11), did a great couple of circles right over head before heading off up the valley. Seen in the usual place up Waiohopai Valley near Renwick.

I know that this bird has been seen on Waihopai Valley Rd (Spy Valley) for years but I have been in the area a few times and never seen it - can anyone give a more precise location as the road is several km long?
thanks
Alan

Hi Alan,
Here is a poor map here indicating where I've seen it (near Johnsone Estate ), and is where I think most other sightings have been, + or - a km or so. http://www.birdingnz.net/forum/viewtopi ... 755&#p2695

The Black Kite was present today, in excellent conditions it was displaying with a female Swamp Harrier. At the usual spot. Cheers

I'm going to be down that way in a couple of weeks, anyone have any updates on whether the bird is still there?
