Down with the Stoats and Weasels

Postby Jan » Sun Jan 10, 2010 2:25 pm

This is not a nice sighting. Though it would be in Europe I suppose.
On weds last week, 6th Jan, I was coming home from another fruitless
search through the Godwits for their legbands. They hide them in the grass at
Charlesworth, now they know we are after them.
Along Cashmere Rd, near the junction with Corgwyn Pl. a small group of little
wormy-shaped, furry beasties came tumbling out of the road-side grasses,
squeaking furiously and rolling around each other. I swear the wheels went over some of them,
but on going back, I only saw 1 disappearing back into the grass again.
Cunning little #$%%&*(). Must have been a nest of 5 kits/stoats/weasels. I think young stoats.

Had my first NZ stoat at, of all places, Miranda a couple of weeks ago. At least I assume it was a stoat. I didn't get a good look, but Weasels are renowned for their curiosity and will approach humans, and this one scampered away quickly. I quite like them, though of course they are out of place down here.
