Parrots

Postby Ian Southey » Mon Sep 12, 2011 10:58 am

There have been a few interesting things written on parrots lately. The first is about the origins of the two goups of African parrots, one from Australia, and includes New Zealand and Pacific groups in the tree. pdf

The second suggests that parrots are closely related to songbirds and suggests that this may be why they have a capacity vocal learning. PDF

Interesting. Nestor (kaka and kea) is shown as a sister group to all the other parrots, out by themselves (kakapo wasn't analysed). The NZ parakeets are in a group with New Caledonian and Australian genera, seems to make sense.
