Has anyone ever seen or heard of spoonbills nesting at Pauatahanui (by Porirua, Wellington)?
I was there today and there was a pair on the island in front of the hide which were actively gathering sticks and other vegetation (even trying to pull leaves or twigs off a growing bush on the island) and tamping them down in one spot on the ground with their bills. There were about fifteen spoonbills roosting on the other island to the left, and one of those came over and also starting gathering sticks / twigs (without taking them to the same spot as the other two birds).
It certainly looked as if they were starting construction of a nest.

Maybe not relevant, but I've seen immature Royal Spoonbills playing with sticks, like they were having fun, or figuring something out
