This is a story all about the challenges and struggles that the Southern New Zealand Dotterel, one of our most endangered birds that is on the brink of extinction in Aotearoa, face to survive on Rakiura. It also shines a spotlight on the passionate rangers who dedicate themselves to live among the birds year-round and help protect them.
Underbirds was filmed as a part of the Directors’ Science Communication degrees at the University of Otago by students Abi Liddell, Brady Clarke, and Isabella Lewis. They travelled to Rakiura and spent a week at the dotterel ranger's hut then returned to Dunedin to edit and put this visually captivating and compelling story together.
