Tern Id wanted

Postby BerndHuss » Mon Apr 15, 2024 6:39 pm

I went to Waipu last Saturday hoping to see a Fairy Tern. I didn't think I succeeded, but I took photos of a very small Tern which I cannot identify. The bird was very far away (roughly 70-100m) so the photos only offer very vague features. On the last picture to the right are 2 Caspian Terns and a Red-billed Gull, which can be used for size comparison. It was very small, but it seems to have a black bill and the legs don't look orange, which seems to rule out a Fairy, but maybe Little Tern??

Bernd

Its the offseason. The Fairy terns will have gone 2-3 months ago when they had finished breeding. They'll probably be somewhere on the Kaipara now.
