I hear that same sound at night and in Waiheke with no possums. Surrounded by bush. It's definitely a short sharp eow! Maybe a morepork but don't hear it after.

Hello, I'm new here and stumbled across this site whilst trying to find out the same thing. I'm in the bush in Titirangi and hear this call very often at night. I thought it was a possum. I was out on the deck a couple of nights ago, looking straight out to the bush, to the left I could hear this call. Although it was dark I saw a maybe magpie sized bird fly by, but it had a very long tail. The call at the left had stopped and had now started over to the right.

Also heard a shinning cuckoo at the folks place in Waimauku last weekend, very cool.

Cheers

Welcom Mason. Have a listen to the recordings of long-tailed cuckoo at http://www.nzbirdsonline.org.nz/species ... ird-sounds
Could it be that?

Thanks for the welcome Neil. Yes I've had a listen to these recordings, as that was the closest to how the bird looked as it flashed by. That wasn't it unfortunately.

Cheers, Mason

I think you maybe refering to the little owl. Sounds like a cat. Try this link for a recording of it

Hi everyone - I know this post is quite old but I am new to the site and stumbled across this post whilst looking for the reason I've been kept up nights with the "eow" sound all night. It's absolutely deafening and I've never heard it before. We live on a lifestyle block North of Auckland and have lots of birds that come and stay for a few days before making their way off somewhere else. It turns out it is a peacock. I heard it early this morning and ran out to the top paddock, pj's, gumboots and all and there it was in full glory making that sound. Just to be sure I went in search of peacock sounds and sure enough, it is a peacock. Have a look at the following website which has the exact sound..http://www.bamboopeacock.com/Noisy_Peacocks.html

Hi all,

Would love to know what it is, could it be this bird/animal that we are talking about? We hear this nearly every night, in the Waitakeres.
Here's a link to the audio we recorded: https://goo.gl/WuLJrG

Hi Rob,

Yes, your recording shows a variety of morepork call.
