Cattle Egrets

Rosemary Heather has been talking to Max Maddock of Newcastle Australia. Max is the person who discovered that most of the Rangiriri Cattle egrets came from his personally observed colony near Newcastle, NSW. This breeding colony used to be 350 pairs back in the 70s when Barrie Heather was working on Cattle Egrets. Evidently, so Rosemary says, it is now only 75 pairs.

They both now wonder if the birds coming to New Zealand have shown a similar decline in numbers.

If anyone has knowledge of these birds and their numbers both Rosemary and Max would be keen to hear about them. Incidently Max is the person who officially opened the Miranda Centre back in 1990. He had been instrumental in setting up the Hunter Wetlands Centre near Newcastle and so his interest in Miranda. He is now about 80 I think.

Regards
