Gannets returning (Cape Kidnappers)

Postby Neil Fitzgerald » Fri Aug 07, 2009 8:10 pm

Visited the gannet colony on a trip around the Cape Kidnappers sanctuary today. There were birds (Eila Lawton counted ~30) at the beach colony which apparently must have arrived back in the last two days. None seen at the saddle or plateau.

Neil.

They normally arrive back around late July/early August but numbers on the colonies fluctuate wildly depending on time of day and weather until late August when males begin to stake out their nest sites again. Nest building will occur during late Aug and early Sept and laying generally starts mid-late September.
