Young Oystercatchers , Waikanae Estuary .

Postby jfmbirds » Thu Dec 16, 2021 10:08 pm

We have had a lot of rain in Kapiti recently and the Waikanae River has flooded on several occassions , with the main channel near the mouth changing the contour of the big sandbar .I was down there this evening , - please to see a roped off area and signage advising of the NZ Dotteral nesting area . No sign of the Dotterals but a good range of other birds .Was pleased to see two pairs of noisy Variable Oystercatchers . One couple with 3 very mobile chicks , - juvenile plumage but obviously growing quickly .
