Adult whiskered and immature WWBT both showing well at Waituna again yesterday evening 02/02 in company of at least 90 black-fronts. Same area but at times ranging far over the lagoon to feed. Impressive insect hatch evident between heavy rain showers, with columns of midges similar to the photo Andrew posted recently from Ellesmere.

Cheers,
Sean.

Checked Waituna again yesterday evening. No whiskered tern present but the white-winged black tern showed up just before I left. I did see a large group 20+ terns hawking quite far away to the east of where the usual flock hangs out. so whiskered was possibly with those birds.

Cheers, Bradley.

White winged black tern present this afternoon, and WWBT and whiskered tern seen by other birders this morning. No sign of phalarope yet. Fingers crossed it’s re-sighted!

WWBT present this morning in same area indicated on Bradley’s original map. Roosting with 49 ruddy turnstones and feeding in shallow channels. It was viewed throughout the day yesterday, associating with black-fronted terns or on its own.

No sighting of whiskered tern yesterday evening amongst 80+ black-fronted tern, and not seen yet this morning.

Has anyone processed a UBR for this bird? I know Pete McClelland is doing one for the Phalarope.

Hey Phil,

I was going to do the UBR for the Whiskered tern however the online submissions page on birdsnz website is currently being worked on and cant be accessed. there is a link to submitting it as a word document however that link isn't working either. the page should be up and running in "early 2022" according to the website so I will do it then, unless there is another way I'm not aware of?
