Part White SIPO on the Whanganui River Estuary

Postby Paul Gibson » Mon Jan 22, 2024 10:34 am

A lovely looking part leucistic South Island Pied Oystercatcher was on the Whanganui River Estuary this morning. Its head is mostly white, and it stood out from the flock of 32 it was in. Soon after we photographed it a dog came along and the flock flew, heading north from Whanganui. Likely a group migrating north. It was real birdy this morning with good numbers of several species, including a juvenile Caspian tern with band H80, banded at Bell Island, Nelson, in mid-December 2023. Godwit AJD (the subject of a book) is on the estuary for his 16th summer.
