Adelie Penguin, St Clair beach, Dunedin

Postby Michael Szabo » Tue Jan 16, 2024 10:32 am

An Adelie Penguin was photographed on St Clair Beach in Dunedin early this morning by Fiona Gray and posted on social media, but I've been told that since then it has been taken into care by DOC because it is a very busy beach with a lot of dogs.

The Adelie Penguin is reportedly now at the penguin rehab facility at Penguin Place (aka OPERA) on the Otago Peninsula, where they say that as long as it is healthy and shows no signs of stress it will be viewable 'for all our guests to enjoy' (apparently there is an entry fee). For further details see the post below.

The bird was released at the OPERA (Penguin Place) yesterday and is still on the beach, can only be seen on their tours but if it stays much longer might get moved again.

Have just heard from Oscar that the bird wasn’t present for the last two tours of the day and is assumed to have gone out to sea.

One to keep an eye out for along the coast in both directions in case it comes ashore again.
