11 Black-fronted Terns, Plimmerton

Postby Michael Szabo » Wed Feb 21, 2024 6:02 pm

Saw eleven Black-fronted Terns with 150 White-fronted Terns at Plimmerton fire station rocks at 1pm today (photos below).

Oskar Ehrhardt also reports seeing over 2000 WFTs at sea from Pukerua Bay later this afternoon so it's probably worth checking there and Plimmerton for roosting birds.

His mother also saw a large number of terns in Wellington harbour while driving north along the motorway from Thorndon.

Roger Brent Smith also reports there were 3 Black-fronted Terns with the White-fronted Tern flock at Waikanae Sandspit yesterday plus 'a small flock of Caspian Terns' including three with leg bands.

There were about 500 White-fronted Terns at Plimmerton fire station rocks this morning plus 2 Black-fronted Terns and 1 Caspian Tern.
Sally Eyre also reported a large flock of WFTs at Pukerua Bay but no BFTs among them.
This weekend could be a good time to check these flocks for BFTs, Common Terns etc.

Checked the Waitohu Estuary for any, unfortunately none as there were only 4 WFT.
