Great Knot, Pūkorokoro Miranda

Postby Michael Szabo » Wed Mar 27, 2024 1:58 pm

A Great Knot has been reported at Pūkorokoro Miranda today via the reserve's Facebook page:

Some great views of the bird from the Kuaka Hide in amongst the Red Knots.
Many of the Arctic migrants have departed but there are still some left and ready to go. The tides are perfect here this weekend if you’d like to catch the last few departures of the season.
But there is always much to see with wintering Arctic migrants and NZ migrants here for the winter. Come and enjoy our important tidal and wetland environments.

Great Knot still there on this mornings high tide and had some good views so a successful day. Most of the other birds present, reports whimbrel now at Kawakawa bay but didn't see them when I passed thru.

Great knot again easily found in front of the Godwit Hide this morning, though it mostly kept its head tucked in while we were there. Still plenty of godwits and red knots, many colouring up well.

As David says, the bird was present this morning at high tide. It was around for the three hours we spent there, quite close in front of the Kuaka hide. It took flight at one point and landed back in the flock after a strong gust of wind. Still about 40 PGP around and a few are starting to colour up nicely. Great morning with lots of happy birders despite the weather!

Great photo Caiden, and thanks for finding the bird in the first place.
