Nankeen night heron, Ohakune

This juvenile nankeen night heron was photographed yesterfay afternoon in Ohakune township, at the end of Carter terrace, by the Mangawhero river, and shared to Facebook by Connor Drrll

Thanks Oscar, we were contacted yesterday afternoon about this bird that we identified as a Nankeen night heron chick, less than eight weeks old. It raises the question of another colony along the Mangawhereo River that runs along the side of Ohakune. This bird is too young to have flown from Upokongaro, Whanganui. Further investigation is needed. I'm not sure where the birds is now, they were trying to catch it, DoC among them.
