Australasian Gannet grounded in Wellington

Postby Michael Szabo » Sun Apr 28, 2024 11:41 am

I found this injured Takapu Australasian Gannet grounded on the beach in Island Bay on Wednesday. It was obviously not well and it turned out that it had a fishing lure with hooks stuck in its leg. With the help of a friend we caught the bird in a towel and placed it in a large box and took it to the bird rehab vets at Wellington Zoo where it is now being cared for. I heard yesterday via my friend that it is alive and recovering in care at the zoo.

Well done, Michael. It is a treacherous life for birds these days, with plastics, fishing nets and many more man made hazards.
