I went birding today at Waiwera, and saw 43 species of bird. Not bad for a Sunday Morning. At first we (me and my mum, Jo) went to the spit on the beach, where there was an extremely high tide. This squashed all 12 Dotterels into the roped off area. Most birds were in pairs, and were chasing off any intruders from their territories. One pair has a nest, with eggs. One of these birds is banded: RL (top to bottom)-orange, green; LL- blue, white. Other birds of interest seen at Waiwera were:
Variable Oystercatcher c.20
SIPO c.15
NZ Scaup
NZ Dabchick- 1 in the oxidation ponds, 5-10 at Straka's Refuge
NZ Shoveler
Grey Teal- with 3 chicks
Pied Stilt
Cheers

Re: Waiwera
Went to Wenderholm this afternoon. Spent an hour or so watching the muddy area opposite the camping ground entrance, and a very colourful hour it was too!
First up was the silhouette of a crake/ rail! then I watched the eastern rosellas, kingfisher and tui flying over the creek bed feeding and generally going about their day!
Then a shadow moved in the mangroves before a banded rail finally emerged and quickly fed in the channel before disappearing again. It re-apeared briefly to bathe and that was that!
