Green Parrot

Postby Sandy » Fri Nov 08, 2013 7:50 pm

Hi,

Seen this morning at Stillwater, Weiti Estuary, Silverdale.

Has been around for approx six weeks

Larger than local Easter Rosella but enjoys their company.

Suggestions range from Sri Lanka ( escapee) to Australia escapee or trans Tasman refugee.

Ideas please and should DOC be informed.

Cheers, Martin

ps enjoys loquats!

A ring-necked or rose-ringed parakeet. A group have been seen recently near Paeroa. Nearest feral population is in Western Australia, so probably released or escaped cage birds - a popular pet. Not wanted in NZ, and yes, DOC should be advised.

I was in the vicinity of those parrots near Paeroa (Komata) yesterday, so gave the people who first reported them a call. They said they hadn't seen them for about six weeks, but they've been around for a couple of years - at least a dozen of them. On the strength of that I didn't go searching, but have asked to be kept in touch if the birds return.

Just let these rose-necked parrots lives in wild, they are not unwanted pests yet. No need to report to DOC about such too few exotic parrots. DOC are not interested in hear about such few exotic parrots.

Totally disagree Clint...
Why wait till there are enough to be an unwanted pest...decimating out fruit and apple crops.. and THEN be such a huge issue financially and in practice... like the Rosella an impossible task.
And Art will be very interested

Steps,
I had not seen rosellas, the numbers of parrots do not grow to 100 birds with 1 year time, from a pair.
Had you seen Eastern rosellas this morning ??? yesterday ???
As it is no point trying to get rid of exotic parrots when their numbers are too low.

Look at mallard ducks, sparrows, mynas, and Eastern rosellas, Mute swans...they are here to stay.
When I was in my 20s I used to destroying sparrows and starlings, but I was told that these exotic birds cannot be destroyed until there are none, and they have rights to life in NZ.
So today I do not brother these birds.

So admire the colours of Eastern rosellas and male mallard ducks or usefulness of starlings and mynas for controlling insects and grassgrubs.

Only Red Vented Bulbuls can be destroyed, and are to be banned from entering NZ and Australia.

Bill looks rather large from this angle - maybe an Alexandrine Parakeet?
