I saw an adult female NZ Falcon perched high in a dead tree near the Treehouse in the Botanic Garden today about 1pm. I also heard 2 Rifleman in the area below the Treehouse shortly before 1pm.

Don’t know if this is a common sighting, but over the past few days I’ve been seeing kingfishers on fields. Never seen that before.

I watched a falcon perched then fly from the carillon while walking to work. It is back there now 30 min later (viewed from my office window, plus Kate can see it with binoculars from home).

Kārearea back on carillon 8:45

It returned about 11:00 and was perched there for at least 40 mins, getting swooped at by a pair of black-backed gulls, before diving out of site behind the Dominion Museum building at 12:20.

The pair were both there at dusk, actively hunting birds flying past on their way to roost - the male targeting starlings, and the large female chasing feral pigeons.

The attached image was taken by Te Papa photographer Jean-Claude Stahl.

I wish there was a little bit more sunlight (was overcast with occasional spitting) out as I think I would have done even better.
