A bit of a speedy trip up the penisular last weekend. The target was Port Charles for brown teal, of which there were plenty (~50), including a couple in nice colour. Also a reef heron, several VOCs, 2x Caspian terns and a couple of NZ dots.
A kaka was flying around the Stoney Bay camp on Saturday evening.
There was also a reef heron at the northern end of Buffalo Beach, Whitianga on Saturday, and still there on the return trip on Sun. Was nice to see it as I spend a bit of time over the other side at Front Beach and they are few and far between. I'm a surprised the atlas suggests their distribution hasn't changed much in recent time, because I'm sure they used to be more common around there. That may say something about the weakness of human memory, or at least mine.

I forgot to mention the white heron feeding in the small river which flows to the northern end of Waikawau Beach. The Waikawau on the north east of the peninsular, not the one on the south west:
