Could be mistaken but I think the apparent band on the Curlew is a product of shadow on the rest of the leg and bright sun just above the foot. The pale patch looks too long and there is no obvious change in thickness from the rest of the tarsus.

Yes, Russ, that was my thinking as well. Just a trick of the light.

I would have to agree with you there, as I am sure I photographed all of the birds Oscar did, and that "band" didn't show up in any of mine...

1 Just keeping everyone on their toes, Oscar! I looked again and agree it probably isn't a band, esp. as there is no thickening in leg where the 'band' is. I already noticed that before you mentioned it, sleuth-Russell.

2 Oscar, those are great pics on your flicka thingy, much better than when posted on the forum. Keep it up!

3 I have some photos taken in Burma [by another birder with us] of small waders wintering over there. Lots of Broad-bill S, LOTS at once. If I can work out how to post them I will have a go. They are one of my favourite waders.

Yes, Jan, it's one of my favourites too. Here's a short video of one I saw earlier this year in England.

Hi David,
I have just joined BirdingNZ Net
I would like to view the BB Sandpiper but the weather forecast is for heavy falls with strong Northeasterlies rising to gale force in the afternoon. Also you mentioned the lower tide.
Is there a possibility that you would make a third visit to this site please?

Yes , Neil, heat haze is always a problem on warm sunny days in the UK, particularly when using high magnification. ( 115X mag used for this clip, using Nikkor 800mm lens.)
