Drake Northern shoveler and chestnut teal, Invercargill tip lagoon
At the site that keeps on giving a cracking drake Northern Shoveler is showing right now, in the same large duck flock as the immature drake chestnut teal. Will post some pics tomorrow evening.

Northern shoveler was on the far side of the lagoon opposite the bird shelter, tried to find the Chestnut Teal but scoped through hundreds of birds with no luck. This was at 3,00pm today.

HI all,
I just recieved a message from Matt Jones to say that the drake Northern Shoveler, along with a drake Chestnut-breasted Shelduck were at the lagoon this afternoon. No teal of any description (Grey, nor Chestnut) were seen.
cheers

Do people also check the poo ponds just up the road, whilst at tip lagoon?

I spoke with Johannes Fischer who visited Tip lagoon on Thursday morning and he ran into Sean who informed him that he’d been checking the poo ponds and hadn’t seen anything there. And that in general numbers of teal had been declining quickly over the last few weeks

Hi David and Steve,
I think Johannes spoke to Paul (we are identical twins!). Must be some confusion along the way as neither of us have checked the poo ponds due to a shortage of time. We had also speculated that the ducks may be using that site. Numbers of ducks on the tip lagoon were very high up to 21/10, and have dropped right off since then. Presumably birds are dispersing to breed, but there has also been a lot of eel activity in the lagoon this week that is visibly disturbing the birds, so this may also be a factor.
Give the poo ponds a go if you get the chance, I'm new down here, so can't comment on the access arrangements, might be best to ask Phil Rhodes?
Cheers, Sean.

Re: Drake Northern shoveler and chestnut teal, Invercargill tip lagoon
Hi Sean,
All good. I remember last Oct.(25th Oct to be precise) when I was down for a N. Shoveler, it was frequenting both areas and we saw it on the poo ponds amongst loads of other ducks and it seemed a very popular place for duck at the time.
For the record, there was some access that we used along the perimeter so not necessary to go in as such, but it was heaving with waterfowl.
If I get a chance I plan to come down for the Teal if it turns up again.
Keep up the good work.
Cheers
