Turangi Blue Ducks

Postby sav » Sun Oct 13, 2019 10:00 pm

Hi all,

I'm on tour at the moment, and we were at Turangi last night. We saw one Blue Duck at Major Jones' Pool in the evening and a pair this morning.

Two separate locals told us that the pair had already fledged and "kicked out" a brood of 3 (or 5?) that were full grown.

I find that really hard to believe, but does anyone else think/know that it can be true?

Another pair that we found had fluffy, week-old, chicks

cheers

Perhaps they meant last summer's brood? I'm not sure.

We were in the Ruahines with DOC on the weekend doing trapline checks, and some of the other folks saw pairs of whio with 5 chicks each. Not fledged, but still pretty early.
