Okere Falls - Ring-necked parakeets

Post by Tim Barnard »

Hi
Think these have been reported before, there's a colony of ring-necked parakeets at Okere Falls by Lake Rotoiti - they have been there for five years or so. In spite of Docs best efforts they seem to be hanging on. Just managed to snap a photo of one as it zipped overhead on Saturday evening... guess I can't tick it yet Brent?? lol
Cheers
Tim

Here is the other thread: http://www.birdingnz.net/forum/viewtopi ... rrot#p2716

If they are regularly seen at Okere, and 6 km away where I was seeing them, I do wonder if they are the same birds or parts of a larger population.

Actually spoke to DoC and sounds like they're not onto it yet. May have been EBOP that had a few posters up at the Okere Falls Store (noticed it whilst supping a german beer or two) - concern would have been more commercial than conservation - impacts on fruit growers etc etc etc ...

Getting off topic here. This topic is about ring-necks near Rotorua, other discussions are better in another thread.
Thanks,

Hi Clinton,
You are welcome to discuss these things, just that it is better to start a new thread to do it in; it makes it easier for people to follow and find things. I might split this one off later.

it's later, and I've split it. OT posts now reside here http://www.birdingnz.net/forum/viewtopi ... 3859#p3859

Hi
Since posting this, I've seen ring-necks on three different occasions in the same general area, including two last night calling and flying quite high over Taheke Road (close to where the Kaituna River cuts under the bridge as you leave Okere Falls... popular kayaking spot).
Cheers

Hi
Just for info.
Pretty sure these birds have been eliminated. Haven't seen them for a long time now.
Cheers
