Sooty Tern breeding at Three Kings Islands

Matt Rayner reports an adult Sooty Tern defending a nest with two chicks at the Three Kings Islands (Princes Island Group) yesterday.

Wow that's exciting. But on the other hand it's also climate catastrophy in action. The spread of Pied Shag and Little Black Shag further south in the S Island are also indications, plus the changes in bait fish as food for penguins in the south.

Having those White-capped Mollymawks there is pretty interesting too. I wonder if they might be thinking about breeding too. What a neat little mix of tropical and sub-antarctic.

Further intrigue here is that sooty terns only lay a single egg!
