South Island Birding Spots

Post by craiga »

Hi all. I've got the wonderful opportunity to spend the next month on holiday in the South Island. As a relatively new birder (first post!!) I was wondering if anyone had tips on places to visit. Where are the special South Island birding sites?? I've got a few lined up already, but want to make the most of the trip.

Where in the South Island are you going?
140 birds on my life list since 17 June 2020, latest bird Black-browed Albatross.
123 birds on my 2024 year list as of 2 July, latest bird Westland Petrel.

There's a good feature on ebird (if you use it) that tells you what your best bets are for a given region, to contribute to your lists too

Thanks for your replies. I'll mainly be spending time in the West Coast, Fiordland, Stewart Island and Caitlins. Will head up through Dunedin and Christchurch on way back North though. Thanks for the tip about ebird. I've registered, but am not familiar with all the features - I'll check that out.
