Captive Bird Price Guide?

Post by SomesBirder »

I am aware that this forum may not be the most suitable of places to make an enquiry such as this, but I do not know of anywhere else where I can do so.
Does anyone here know if there is some form of a price guide to the captive birds that can be acquired in New Zealand, or perhaps a list of breeders who hold birds that are not to be seen in pet shops? The closest thing that I can find is the "Rare Breeds" website, but it has very limited information on birds.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Trade Me might be able to give some ideas as there is a wide range of breeds and price indications, but would mean trolling through the site.

I forgot to mention that I have been looking at the TradeMe listings. They have definitely been helpful (as well as surprising), but I would like to know if there is a comprehensive information source about the birds available.

bit of a tricky one that,at the moment bird prices are at an all time low?maybe a hangover from the recession but people seem to have run out of spare cash for things like birds and animals? As an example 5-6 yrs ago when I bought some king parrots the price for a pair was $1200 or more and they were snapped up fast.To be able to purchase a single hen was allbut unheard of and they could name their price.same thing with crimson rosellas, now days I have seen them for much less and down to $200 each.Birdsales and clubs seem to operate by word of mouth and the prices go up and down according to availability and popularity.Another example would be himalayan monal pheasants which I also keep and breed.$800 a young pair is the going rate and although the price has not changed due to rarity,i still have 3 pairs unsold from last year?

1/It is illegal to sell native birds animals
2/Trade me have Strict rules on no listings
3/Pet shops cant stock or sell.. and to display require a DoC permit
4/The only NZ birds that can be kept /breed by private breeders in NZ are kakariki RC and YC
5/Technically also other species but being able to source or get a permit is impossible due to the bureaucracy behind it
6/The Northland DoC has not permitted any new permits for several yrs now , in spite of the legislation.
7/The ball park 'donation ' for a RC kakariki is around the $40 to $50 and YC sometimes a little higher
8/The costs , not including capital cost of aviaries or labour , to breed kakariki.. seed, water veggies , floor maintenance etc is about $10 to $12 per bird, with at least 3 breeding pair

I never asked about Kakariki. You may find them to be interesting, but I have no interest in purchasing them; let alone the fact that the process before doing so would be complicated enough.

Is that how you found out that there is only one female Kalij Pheasant left in the country?

Les, I too breed Monals. Do you have any birds to re-home and/or sell. I am in Hamurana area and desperately some out-cross lines. My birds free-range in very large enclosures here.
Cheers
