High White Faced Heron concentration

Post by ianscott »

On my way to Coopers Lagoon yesterday I came across a field with five Eastern Cattle Egrets but what was amazing I counted 62 White Faced Herons. Would that be an unusual amount in one spot. Location Lower Lake Road Leeston about 1 km from the Lakeside Domain turnoff.

What is interesting is the pivot irrigator in the background. These things can also spread dairy effluent. In the crust of the effluent live tiny little red annalid worms that undoubtedly get spread, also the effluent brings earthworms to the soil surface. Have seen dozens of white-faced herons and a few white herons perched on the irrigator waiting for it to start.
