BirdingNZ now has push notifications. This means you can get instant pop-up notifications of new posts based on settings you control.
To turn it on, go to your User Control Panel > Board preferences > Edit notification options, then "Turn on push notifications". You can then select which events you want to get notifications for.
You can also click on the notifications (bell) icon near the top right of the page, then toggle the "Enable push notifications" switch to quickly turn them off or on.
When you get a notification, you will probably need to tell your browser/phone to allow it.
The exciting thing here is that if you subscribe to the Priority Alerts forum, you can get alerts or interesting birds directly from BirdingNZ (without going via Twitter/X).
I have been using push notifications for a few weeks now, and it is quite neat but not without quirks. On mobile devices, you need to add BirdingNZ to your desktop, and I believe you must do this with Safari on iPhones.
There may be power-saving settings and other things that could interfere. You may need to do some web searching to find out how to set your device up if it's not working. I am keen to hear how you get on, so do post here.
An urgent rebuild of the system BirdingNZ runs on has resulted in loss of posts made over the past week.

Re: Push Notifications - new feature
Has anyone tried this? It's working really nicely for me on iPhone/Safari. I mad a recent change that will hopefully fix issues with notifications on iPhone stopping after a few successful notifications.
On Android, I'm still having some issues.
