Some good news for the Tara Iti NZ Fairy Tern - sand mining company McCallum Bros Ltd have agreed they will abandon a High Court legal case seeking to continue sand mining at Mangawhai, Te Arai and Pākiri in areas where these critically endangered birds feed during the breeding season. As part of an agreement with Manuhuri Kaitiaki Charitable Trust (Ngāti Manuhuri) they will settle costs awarded to Ngāti Manuhuri in 2024 and, effective immediately, they will no longer mine sand under the existing consent:
